Domaine Zind Humbrecht

Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos Saint-Urbain Grand Cru

Rangen de Thann is the most spectacular and certainly the most noble vineyard in all of Alsace. Lying to the south of the region, it has enjoyed an excellent winegrowing reputation since the 12th Century. With its gently sloping position which sits at 350-400 m altitude, the volcanic vineyard is unique for Alsace; the dark reddy-brown soil and south-facing aspect produce a characterful Riesling, with a crystalline texture and unforgettable depth. It can cellar for a good 20 years.

An Iconic Expression of Alsace Terroir

The Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos Saint-Urbain Grand Cru, crafted by Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, is a masterpiece from one of Alsace’s most prestigious vineyards. This wine is a quintessential example of the region’s ability to produce Riesling with exceptional depth, complexity, and purity.

A Spectacular Terroir

Located in the southernmost part of Alsace, the Rangen de Thann Grand Cru is a steep, dramatic vineyard perched at an altitude of 350 to 400 meters. The unique volcanic soil, combined with its south-facing exposure, provides a perfect environment for Riesling. This terroir imparts a distinct mineral intensity and smoky character, making it unparalleled in the region.

The Clos Saint-Urbain

The Clos Saint-Urbain, a walled section of the Rangen vineyard, is named after the patron saint of winemakers. Its microclimate fosters exceptional ripening conditions, enabling the production of wines that are richly textured yet vibrantly fresh.

Winemaking Excellence

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, led by Olivier Humbrecht, Master of Wine, employs biodynamic principles to ensure the health of the vines and the expression of the vineyard’s character. The Riesling is fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured on lees, resulting in a wine of extraordinary precision, complexity, and aging potential.

Tasting Profile

This Riesling displays a crystalline structure and layered flavors of citrus, stone fruits, and flint, underpinned by a vibrant acidity and a profound smoky minerality. Its texture is both powerful and elegant, culminating in a lingering, harmonious finish.

Aging & Legacy

The Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos Saint-Urbain is renowned for its ability to age gracefully for decades. Over time, it develops even greater complexity, with notes of honey, petrol, and dried fruits, solidifying its place as a collector’s gem.

A Singular Alsace Grand Cru

This wine is not just a testament to Alsace’s winemaking heritage but also a vivid expression of the Rangen vineyard’s unique volcanic terroir. It is a must-have for enthusiasts and connoisseurs seeking a truly remarkable Riesling experience.

About the producer: Domaine Zind Humbrecht

Inside the Winerie

Meet with Olivier Humbrecht

Learn more about Olivier Humbrecht, General Manager of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, renowned as the second winemaker in the world to achieve the prestigious Master of Wine title and the first Frenchman to do so.

Pioneers of terroir-driven winemaking in Alsace

The wines of Olivier Humbrecht M.W. need little introduction, possessing great depth, exactitude as well as generosity… like the man himself.

The Humbrecht family viticultural roots can be traced back to The Thirty Years War of 1620. Today they own forty hectares across five villages in the Haut-Rhin, the southern half of the picturesque vineyards overlapping the Vosges foothills, treasured for its idyllic climate, tapestry of terroirs as much for its half-timbered houses.

The domaine has vines in 4 Grands Crus - Rangen (Thann) 5.5 ha, Brand (Turckheim) 2.4 ha, Hengst (Wintzenheim) 1.4 ha, Goldert (Gueberschwihr) 0.9 ha as well as Single Vineyards; Rotenberg (Wintzenheim) 1.8 ha, Clos Häuserer (Wintzenheim) 1.2 ha, Herrenweg (Turkheim) 11.5 ha, Clos Jebsal (Turkheim) 1.3 ha, Heimbourg (Turkheim) 4 ha and Clos Windsbuhl (Hunawihr) 5.2 ha.

Olivier has arguably overseen the most notable improvements in the estate’s illustrious history: a new cellar in 1992 while retaining the traditional ‘foudre’ oval barrels; initiating biodynamic practices in 1997 (certified in 2002); and the buying of a horse in 2006 to plough the vineyards!

Grand Primeur wines represent an innovative approach to purchasing future vintages, allowing anyone to acquire wines directly from producers up to 10 years before production and bottling.

This concept expands on the traditional En Primeur model, which originated in Bordeaux, offering a bold new avenue for wine investment and appreciation.

Whilst En Primeur enables the purchase of wines typically 8 to 18 months following the current vintage (depending on the region), Grand Primeur extends this considerably further. This model allows you to secure exceptional wines directly from producers up to 10 years in advance—before the grapes are even harvested.

Purchasing Grand Primeur wines carries the inherent risk that a vintage may not be produced. This can occur due to adverse weather conditions or when the producer determines that the wine does not meet their exacting quality standards. In such cases, both producers and Cellaris guarantee that buyers will automatically receive an equivalent allocation from the next available vintage produced by the same estate.
