Mas de Daumas Gassac (WIP)

Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge

This is the flagship cuvée of Mas de Daumas Gassac, nicknamed “the Lafite of the Languedoc” in a 1982 article by Gault & Millau. A truly “rare blend,” it is built around Cabernet Sauvignon and peppered with exotic varieties such as Nielluccio, Montepulciano, Saperavi, and Tempranillo, among others. A benchmark wine of the Languedoc since the 1970s, it stands out for a level of elegance and freshness rarely encountered in red wines from Southern France, combined with an impressive ageing potential.

The Unclassifiable Mas de Daumas Gassac

The red cuvée of Mas de Daumas Gassac occupies a category of its own in Southern France. First, its main grape variety, Cabernet Sauvignon, isn’t typical of the region. It was Henri Enjalbert, a highly influential French geographer, who advised Aimé Guibert, after diagnosing the soil of his newly acquired farm, to plant this Bordeaux grape variety. But one single grape variety couldn’t satisfy Aimé Guibert’s thirst for planting… He started to smuggle grapes as he was travelling the world, coming back from Georgia or Spain with cuttings of Saperavi and Tempranillo in his suitcase (among others).

Another distinctive feature of Mas de Daumas Gassac lies in the freshness of its terroir—something few would expect in the deep south of France. The vineyards sit quietly in the Gassac valley, wrapped in small forests and wooded hillsides. These natural surroundings act as a buffer against heat, cooling the vines and slowing down ripening. Beneath the surface, the soils tell an equally unusual story: red glacial deposits, mixed with limestone-derived material, offering both drainage and tension, and giving the wine its unmistakable sense of balance and energy.

From this unlikely setting emerges a style that feels just as out of place as the grape varieties themselves. The wine speaks a Bordelais language in its structure—firm, precise, built for time—yet its accent is unmistakably southern. Dark fruit and cedar mingle with wild herbs, garrigue, and subtle spice, as if Bordeaux had taken a long walk through the Languedoc. Power is never the point here; instead, the wine consistently chooses elegance, freshness, and quiet complexity.

Time, perhaps more than anything else, reveals the true nature of this cuvée. Repeated tastings across several decades have shown how slowly and confidently it evolves. Years pass, then decades, and the wine sheds youth without losing vitality. Aromas deepen, textures soften, but the core remains remarkably intact. This rare ability to age with grace firmly places the red cuvée of Mas de Daumas Gassac among the most enduring and compelling wines of Southern France.

Mas de Daumas Gassac - 2025 Vintage

A look back at the 2025 vintage from Mas de Daumas Gassac, an iconic Languedoc estate. Discover the characteristics of this new vintage from the Gassac Valley, the birthplace of great wines.

The Legacy of a Visionary Estate

Mas de Daumas Gassac was born in the early 1970s from the intuition—and quiet defiance—of Aimé Guibert. Convinced that the secluded Gassac valley had the potential to produce a truly great wine, he chose to follow the logic of the land rather than that of appellation rules, laying the foundations of a singular estate that would soon defy classification.

Today, this vision remains firmly in family hands. The estate is run by the four Guibert brothers—Samuel, Gaël, Roman and Basile Guibert—working closely alongside their mother, Véronique. Rather than reinventing the estate, each generation has focused on preserving its identity, refining the wines while remaining faithful to their origins.

Surrounded by forests and planted on rare red glacial soils mixed with limestone, the vineyards benefit from an unusually cool microclimate for Southern France, bringing freshness, balance and restraint to wines built around Cabernet Sauvignon and blended with numerous rare varieties. Elegant, structured and remarkably age-worthy, they express what Basile Guibert sums up simply: the ambition was never to make a wine of rules, but a wine of place.

Grand Primeur wines represent an innovative approach to purchasing future vintages, allowing anyone to acquire wines directly from producers up to 10 years before production and bottling.

This concept expands on the traditional En Primeur model, which originated in Bordeaux, offering a bold new avenue for wine investment and appreciation.

Whilst En Primeur enables the purchase of wines typically 8 to 18 months following the current vintage (depending on the region), Grand Primeur extends this considerably further. This model allows you to secure exceptional wines directly from producers up to 10 years in advance—before the grapes are even harvested.

Purchasing Grand Primeur wines carries the inherent risk that a vintage may not be produced. This can occur due to adverse weather conditions or when the producer determines that the wine does not meet their exacting quality standards. In such cases, both producers and Cellaris guarantee that buyers will automatically receive an equivalent allocation from the next available vintage produced by the same estate.
